Tinnitus Therapy

Tinnitus therapy is an established treatment approach aimed at reducing both the severity of a patient’s tinnitus and the emotional distress and anxiety that tinnitus sufferers often experience.

Our tinnitus therapy courses comprise of face-to-face and/or video consultations, telephone and email contact and additional exercises and ‘homework’ to be undertaken between sessions. The structure and length of the course is specifically tailored to the needs and lifestyle of each individual patient.

The course is run by Ruth Bannister, BSc, who is specially trained in tinnitus management and who suffers with tinnitus herself.  It is designed to help patients gain a better understanding of their tinnitus with achievable, realistic goals set for each individual, for example reducing the loudness of tinnitus or improving sleep.  Mindfulness, relaxation therapies, sound therapy, breathing exercises and cognitive behavioural therapy techniques may all be recommended as part of a patient’s personal treatment plan.

The course is suitable for the following people:

  • Patients with bothersome bilateral tinnitus
  • Patients who have unilateral tinnitus that has been investigated by MRI to rule out vestibular schwannoma
  • Patients who have completed pure tone audiometry and have been fitted with hearing aids (if required)
  • Patients who have noticed that their tinnitus has become more intrusive in the past 12 months
  • Patients who are clear of earwax or who have regular microsuction to manage earwax build-up
  • Patients who are struggling with sleep, daily activities and general hearing due to their tinnitus

“My husband is delighted with the vast improvement in his tinnitus after being fitted with hearing aids. Dr Carling has been helpful and supportive throughout.”

Therapy for Tinnitus in Kings Hill, Kent

Potential patients will be triaged for suitability for the course based on these criteria and will be asked to complete a short questionnaire before being accepted onto the course.

If they have not had a recent hearing evaluation, we may request that they do so first with one of our Audiology team.

They must also be open to trying different techniques to help reduce their tinnitus and be able to commit to both the full course and to attending all the face-to-face and video sessions required.
